When I first arrived at Southern Maine Community College, I was in awe of the variety of bird species that can be found right outside the classroom! Over the years, I have seen and photographed countless seabirds, birds of prey, and perching birds. Located along the beautiful and rocky coast of South Portland, Maine, Southern Maine Community College is located right on the shores of some incredible bird watching opportunities. The college has a large pier that visitors can walk out to and get close up views of countless birds. There are a few beaches that small shorebirds and perching birds can be spotted as well. My favorite spot is the Osprey next tower located behind the Marine Science Center. The tower stands right in the middle of the cove. Each year a pair of Osprey raise their young here and this is were some amazing photographs and be taken! The kinds of birds seen differ throughout the year. During the cold winter months, seabirds like the Long-Tailed Duck, Common Eider, and the Surf Scoter frequent waters alongside the pier at the school. When summer arrives, Double-Crested Cormorants and terns can be seen catching fish and invertebrates. The photos in this collage have all been photographed at this campus! Southern Maine Community College should be on the list of any bird watcher that wants to get some up close shots of some spectacular birds!
